Foamex Board Printing - The Do's and Don'ts - Evans Graphics

By Evans Graphics on 03 August 2023

At Evans Graphics we are proud to be in the printing business. Our work takes many forms but, just like it did back in the 15th Century, it’s all about getting your message across, clearly and effectively. Today we use all sorts of media; paper, card, even glass and acrylic, but one of our favourite media is Foamex.

Foamex board is made from extruded PVC and has a strong micro bubble-like texture. It is extruded between two polished rollers creating a strong and durable board. Printing on Foamex is a hugely popular choice for businesses and individuals alike, with a huge choice of applications, from advertising and exhibition panels to outdoor signage. With this in mind it’s important to understand some do's and don'ts of Foamex printing. That way you’ll get the very best from this fabulous invention.

    DO’s:

DO Choose the Right Thickness: Foamex boards come in a variety of thicknesses - 1mm, 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm. Consider your application before deciding on the thickness. For example, 1mm and 3mm boards are perfect for indoor displays and temporary signage, while 5mm and 10mm boards are ideal for outdoor use, offering strength and durability.

DO Use High-Resolution Images: Image quality is key in Foamex printing. High-resolution images will ensure your final product is clear and visually appealing. Avoid stretching or compressing images as this can compromise their resolution and looks awful!

DO Consider Your Environment: If your Foamex board is intended for outdoor use, ensure it's designed to withstand the elements. UV inks, for instance, will typically last two years before you start to see any colour degradation outside. Ask about UV varnishing for increased protection.

    DON’Ts:

DON'T Overcrowd Your Design: Foamex boards offer plenty of space but always remember less is more. Stick to a single, clear message with a compelling call-to-action. Too much text or imagery can be overwhelming and detract from what you want to say.

DON'T Neglect the Bleed: When designing, always account for the bleed area, that’s the margin beyond the cut lines where your design can extend. This ensures your entire image or background colour reaches the edge of the board, creating a professional look without unsightly white borders.

DON'T Forget About Mounting: How you display your message is vital. Foamex boards look great and can be mounted in many ways, so consider your method ahead of time. Whether you're using screws, adhesive, suction cups or even Velcro. Account for this in your design to avoid any awkward placements.

DO Plan Ahead: Foamex board printing offers versatility and durability, making it an excellent choice. However, the difference between a mediocre board and an outstanding one often lies in the details of design and preparation. Keep these do's and don'ts in mind to ensure your next Foamex project is a resounding success.
