What Does Digital Printing Look Like In 2023?

By Evans Graphics on 20 July 2023

As we enter second half of 2023, it's marvellous to see the transformation the world of digital printing has undergone, and where Evans Graphics finds itself right now.

Through revolutionary advancements in technology, and more sustainable practices, the print industry is reinventing itself to meet the needs of customers, and Planet Earth.

    DPO…No!

One of the most significant shifts has been the increased awareness and commitment to ecological responsibility. The latest example of this is the placement of the photo initiator Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (DPO) onto the REACH candidate list for SVHC’s. DPO, is heavily used in the digital printing industry, and is facing universal restriction due to its potential for harmful effects on human health and the environment. This regulation has been the catalyst for a move towards safer alternatives, promoting a cleaner and healthier industry.

As often happens when we’re faced with a setback, the solution is better than before and its certainly true to say that the banning of DPO has triggered a new wave of innovation.

Predictably there’s been a surge in the development and application of eco-friendly photo initiators. These are critical components of ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam (EB) curing technologies in digital printing. These safer, yet effective alternatives don’t only lower our carbon footprint but offer enhanced printing performance to boot. Everyone wins!

    Get real! It’s 3D

As for broader developments in the industry, it’s impossible to overlook the rise of 3D printing and its far-reaching applications. By providing an unmatched customisation capability and cutting down lead times, 3D printing has become indispensable. What’s more, its compatibility with materials such as polymers and metals, makes it a go to solution for a wide range of applications.

    What Are QR?

Augmented reality (AR) has also added new tasks for the print industry. AR-enhanced print materials offer interactive experiences that are changing the dynamics of traditional marketing and advertising strategies. Using our old two-dimensional friend the QR Code (QR stands for Quick Response) your smartphone can transport you to a heightened customer experience. Through the union of print and digital media, business can now engage with clients on a whole new level.

    Let’s get Personal

We shouldn’t forget the increasing market in print-on-demand services. It's now possible to customise your design and place orders for individual prints or small batches with ease and affordability. This shift caters to a growing demand for personalisation and allows for low-risk experimentation and market testing. Again, it’s a win-win situation for customers and business.

    Back to the Future

What’s ahead for the print industry? Well, the digital printing industry is a hugely exciting place to be: Long gone are the days of the Guttenberg Press and laborious typesetting. Expect to see further improvements in sustainability as we explore renewable energy sources and recyclable or biodegradable printing materials. Also, as smart technologies like AI and Internet of Things (IoT) continue to evolve, we are sure to see even more streamlined automation and precision.

    To Infinity and Beyond!

Indeed, the landscape of digital printing in 2023 is a remarkable reflection of our strides towards innovation, sustainability, and improved customer service. At Evans Graphics, we are excited to continue riding this wave of change and look forward to bringing you the best of what the future of digital printing holds.
